The Caucasus Egg

The ninth 1893 egg is called the Caucasus Egg. The Caucasus Egg is made of gold, silver, ruby enamel, rose cut diamonds, portrait diamonds, platinum, ivory, pearls and rock crystal. The egg represents the hunting lodge in Caucasus where Grand Duke George spent most of his life. The egg opens to reveal four paneled doors with a diamond numeral on each forming the year 1893. This is the first egg to be so dated. The hinged cover at the top opens to reveal a picture of the Grand Duke in uniform. Like so many other of the Faberge eggs, the surprise has been lost. You may visit this egg at the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum in Nashville Tennessee.

Diamond Trellis Egg

The eighth 1892 egg is called the Diamond Trellis Egg. The Diamond Trellis Egg is made of a pale green jade and in encircled with bands of silver, gold and rose cut diamonds. It is a shame that so much is lost in time. The base now lost was said to have three cherubs representing the three sons of Alexander and Maria. The now famous surprises inside the Faberge Eggs is also lost, but it was a beautiful carved elephant made of ivory, gold and brilliant diamonds. It is also have said to bear the Coat of Arms of the Royal Danish family. Maria Feodorovna’s home land.

Memory of Azov Egg

The seventh 1891 egg is called the Memory of Azov Egg and sometimes referred to as the Azova Egg. Did you ever hear of Heliotrope Jasper? Well it is also known as Bloodstone. The Azova Egg is carved from this Bloodstone and is decorated with a Louis the XV style of gold rococo scrolls that is studded with brilliant diamonds and gold flowers. The clasp is set with two diamonds and a drop ruby. The interior of the egg is lined with green velvet. The egg commemorates a voyage made by Tsarevitch Nicolas to the Far East. Thus the surprise inside the egg. It is a miniature replica of the cruiser Pamiat Azova. Constructed of red and yellow gold the widows on the Azova are small diamonds. The Azova is set on a piece of Aquamarine representing water. Azov is set on the ships stern.

Danish Palaces

The sixth 1890 egg is called Danish Palaces. The egg is made of pink enameled gold and is split into twelve sections. Rows of rose-cut diamonds separate the sections. There is also an emerald at the junction of the lines. The egg is crowned with a cabochon star sapphire.

The surprise in the egg is that the panels open up revealing paintings of ten Danish Palaces. You can see this egg in person by visiting the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art in Nashville Tennessee.

In an earlier post I told you about the very first Faberge Easter Egg. The Hen Egg that Czar Alexander III gave his wife Empress Maria Fedorovna in 1885. The second egg, known as the Hen with Sapphire pendant is lost with time.

Blue Serpent Clock

The third egg in 1887 is called the Blue Serpent Clock. This ornate egg sits upon a base of gold with white enamel. A golden serpent set with diamonds coils around the base with its head pointing up to the Roman Numerals around the egg indicating the hour. This band rotates and the egg is a actual working clock. The egg is a translucent blue with ornate golden diamond studded bands and handles. Oddly enough this beautiful egg contains no sapphires. There are also no surprises inside the egg as it is a working clock. The egg has quite a history of owners. One such that of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco. Prince Albert II inherited the egg when Rainier died in 2005.

Foil Easter Eggs

We’ve all seen them. Those little foil wrapped chocolate eggs that pop up everywhere at Easter time.

The First Hen Egg

While they may be great to snack on they don’t come close to the eggs that Czar Alexander III gave his wife Empress Maria Fedorovna in 1885. The first egg was known as the Hen Egg. Looking very much like an ordinary egg, the white enamel shell opens to reveal a surprise. A golden yoke. This too open to reveal yet another surprise. A multi colored golden hen. The surprises are not yet over. The hen open to reveal a miniature diamond replica of the imperial crown. Dangling from the crown was a small ruby pendant. Over time the crown and pendant have been lost. Now that is what I would call an Easter Gift.

Maria was so impressed by the gift that Alexander commissioned Carl Faberge to make more of the beautiful eggs. In all fifty Faberge Eggs were made by the goldsmith. Forty Two of the eggs have survived.
