History of Valentine’s Day Part 4

January 24th, 2012

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

In an earlier posting I told of how pope Valentine penned a note to the daughter of his jailer in which he closed with “From Your Valentine”

By the 18th century Valentine’s Day in England was a very popular day. Hand made cards with ribbons and lace often adorned with hearts and cupids were exchanged between lovers. Gifts were also becoming popular accompanied by a card.

It is not surprising that this popular event soon spread to the American colonies. In 1840 Esther Howland began to commercially produce Valentine’s Day cards in quantity. She quickly became known as the Mother of the Valentine and her ribbon and lace cards complete with colorful pictures were a hit. It was when this mass production resulted in the tradition caught on across the United States.

Esther Howland

Today Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular US holidays with over 25% of cards purchase annually being Valentine’s Day cards. There are scores of industries and commercial interests across the nation and world devoted to Valentine’s Day cards and Gift items.

History of Valentine’s Day Part 3

January 20th, 2012

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

In an earlier posting I told of how Claudius II ordered the death of bishop Valentine because he failed to convince him to switch his faith to that of the Roman Gods and Valentine actually tried to convert Claudius to the Catholic faith.

It is said that Valentine developed a friendship with his jailer Asterius and a deeper friendship with his Jailer’s daughter whom he had been credited with the miraculous cure of her blindness. Some believe he fell in love with her. Before his death Valentine penned a note to her in which he closed with “From Your Valentine” a phrase that lives on even today.

Martyred for refusing to give up or renounce his religion it is believed that St. Valentine was executed on February 14th 270 AD. Kind of ironic isn’t it. The day of his execution became a day associated with love and romance.

My Heart is Afitter

As so it is. Valentine’s day had its beginning. Young Roman lovers began exchanging notes expressing their love on February 14th and Valentine became the days patron saint.

By the 14th century St. Valentines Day really began to be associated with love. In the days of France and England during the medieval period it was believed that birds mated on February 14th. Images of birds began to adorn the love notes passed between lovers.

In a book, “Chaucer and the Cult of St. Valentine” the author penned “For this is on St. Valentine’s Day, when every foul cometh there to choose his mate.”

History of Valentine’s Day Part 2

January 18th, 2012

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

In an earlier posting I told of how Valentine’s Day is at least in part credited to a bishop in Rome named Valentine who opposed Rome’s ruler Claudius II and performed illegal and prohibited marriages to Roman soldiers.

While Valentine lived in the third century. It wasn’t until 496 AD that pope Gelasius changed a February 15th fertility celebration known as Lupercalis into a feast day in honor or St. Valentine. The date was then changed to February 14th the modern date of what is now known as Valentine’s Day.

Claudius II

While Valentine may have performed several prohibited marriages in his time it wasn’t long before Claudius learned of his doings and had him arrested. It was rumored that Valentine had saintly abilities and while in prison he was approached by his jailer Asterius for help. Asterius had a blind daughter and asked the bishop to restore her sight. Here we find a conflict in history. According to the Catholic version, Valentine was able to cure Asterius’s daughters sight because of his strong faith. In the Protestant version he had nothing to do with her cure. Regardless of which version you hold to it appears that history records Asterius’s daughters sight was somehow restored.

It is said that Claudius himself approached Valentine in an attempt to convert his faith to the Roman Gods and stop performing marriages. Valentine refused and even attempted to convert Claudius. So angered was Claudius that he ordered his execution.

History of Valentine’s Day Part 1

January 16th, 2012

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

As with many holidays Valentine’s Day has a disputed origin. Many are widely attributed to St. Valentine a priest in Rome around 270 AD. He later became a saint and many attribute Valentines day to him. However there were actually three saint Valentines. One the afore mentioned priest in Rome. The second was a bishop in Terni. Little is know about the third other then the fact that he died in Africa. The strange things about the three is that all of them were martyred on February 14th.

There are no true archives relating to this event making the true history of Valentine’s Day difficult to trace. Also there are different versions of the history, these versions defined by religion. There is a Catholic version and a Protestant version making the history even more difficult to trace.

Both religions do agree on one thing though. That being that Valentine was a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies of Roman soldiers in opposition to emperor Claudius II who had prohibited the marriage of young men in his army. His feeling being that marriage made his men weak and that they would become more emotionally attached to their families rather then to the empire of Rome.
