You notice a few days later a redness around the cut or scrape. Perhaps a little oozing around the cut or scrape. The solution is simple; you go see your doctor. He cleans the wound and give you a prescription for an anti-biotic. Simple yes?

Well it wasn’t always so. In fact there was little that could be done for infections even one hundred years ago. All that could be done was to keep cleaning the wound in hopes that your own body would fight off the bacteria slowly eating away. Many lost limbs or died from infection or blood poisoning.
Penicillin was discovered purely by accident on September 28th 1928. Yes 1928!. It was discovered by Scottish and Nobel Laureate Alexander Fleming when he had accidentally left a petri dish open containing a Staphyococcus culture from the previous day. Early that morning he noticed a blue-green mold had formed and seemed to be inhibiting the growth of bacteria around the mold. He isolated the mold and named it Penicillin. Yet it wasn’t until 1945 that the miraculous cure was purified and went into mass production.
Today it is widely available under a number of names and has been continually altered as many types of bacteria have become resistant to the drug.
