How to cook that perfect bird

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

The perfect bird not only looks appetizing, but is moist tender and absolutely delicious.

Your perfect bird

There are several steps involved in cooking the perfect Thanksgiving Turkey.

The first involves safety. While many advocates praise deep frying your bird, all that hot grease can be a safety hazard. We recommend that you bake your turkey.

Next is thawing your turkey. Because of the bacteria that can grow on your bird while thawing we highly recommend that you thaw your bird in the refrigerator. Plan ahead – A 15 pound turkey may take three or four days to thaw. Do not use a micro-wave or let it sit in the sink overnight.

Next: Okay this may sound kind of dumb, but be sure to remove the neck, giblets and other items from inside the turkey. – You would be surprised at how many people don’t.

Okay next step: While you are doing this, you may want to pre-heat your oven to 475 degrees. This is optional, but we recommend that you try it. Gently peal back the skin from the breast of the turkey. It may sound strange and difficult but it is worth it. Now rub some butter over the bare breast and then place the skin back in place.

Now I know you want to stuff your bird like your mother may have done, but it is not only a health hazard, but it can screw up your cooking times. Bake your stuffing separately.

Just about done. Now salt and pepper the outside of your bird. This helps keep the skin crisp.

Now place the bird in your roasting pan and pop it into the pre-heated oven. Leave the bird in the oven no longer then 20 minutes. This temperature helps to seal the bird and keep it moist.

Now reduce the temperature of the oven to 250 degrees and continue cooking for 20 minutes for each pound. Check the sticker from your market or weigh the bird before hand.

There is no need to baste your turkey, but if you like every half hour or so run a little butter or margarine from a stick over the outside of the turkey.

A slow cooked takes a little longer to cook, but you will be pleased at the results. Let your bird sit for twenty minutes or so to let the juices spread and ease your carving.

Enjoy.
