The History of Fathers Day

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

Father’s Day does not possess the same history as Mother’s Day. If you read some of my previous postings you may recall that Mother’s Day in various forms dates back to ancient Greece and into the days of the Roman Empire.

Father’s Day on the other hand only dates back to 1909 and its origin is pretty much accredited to Sonora Dodd. While listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in Spokane Washington she was inspired to have a special day to honor her father. Her own father William Smart had raised her and her siblings after their mother had died. Touched by the love and care he had given them she organized the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19th, 1910. Her fathers birthday.

Sadly Father’s Day was not as readily accepted as Mother’s Day and was thought to be a hilarity. It wasn’t until 1913 that a bill was introduced making the day official. It wasn’t until 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson supported the idea that it began to gain support. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge added his support to the bill. Decades passed and it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon established the third Sunday in June as the permanent national observance day for Father’s Day.

Wow! Kind of makes you think that father’s were not that popular or a least not as popular as mothers. Well at Bob’s Gift Baskets we think otherwise. We offer a wide variety of gift baskets made just for Dad. Click on Fathers Day Gifts Page or our Gifts For Him Page to check out some of our selections. We allappreciate our dad’s just as much as our mom’s..

A PS from our Web Master:

I hope that many of you had a Dad like mine. He’s gone now, but his memory lives on. He wasn’t always there for me, he didn’t toss a ball to me every time I asked, but he was always there when it really mattered. He told me how to wire up the 220 volt line for the AC in my first house. He taught me how to fix just about anything. The most important thing he taught me was how to figure things out for myself and to respect myself, my wife, my children and all the other people I would meet in my life.

Oh, and one last thing. He did this all while he battled his own inner demons and problems. So give your Dad a hug, a kiss and a gift basket from Bob’s Gift Baskets this Fathers Day. Tell him you care.

A little gift giving history

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

Gift giving. Where it all started. Historical records indicate that gifts were first given out during the time of the Roman Empire. Gifts were given usually in the form of evergreen branches during the winter solace or the first of January. Evergreen branches turned into giving cakes, honeys and other sweet items. Much more popular to receive than a few pine needles.

A Gift To Remember

The same is true today. Gifts of food in particular gourmet foods like those available at Bob’s Gift Baskets are a very popular gift to give or receive.

Today gift giving is a year round event with gifts being given every calender day of the year. Holidays are always a major event, but there are birthdays, sporting and other events, corporate or business gifts expressing a special thank you. Even welcome home or welcome to your new home gifts. We give get well gifts or sorry for your loss gifts. Graduation gifts or gifts to say your sorry to your spouse. Secretaries receive gifts from the boss and they in turn receive gifts from their employees.
