Today in History – May 1st.

The Empire State Building

What is the world’s tallest building? On this day in 1931, then President Herbert Hoover, dedicated the Empire State building by pressing a button turning on it’s lights. The Empire State Building was constructed because of a competition between  Chrysler and General Motors to erect the worlds tallest building. Chrysler held the title only briefly with it’s Chrysler Building until the Empire State Building was completed. At 102 stories and standing 1,454 feet tall (at the top of it’s lightning rod), the Empire State Building held the record for over forty years.

The Empire State building was completed in record time (just over a year) at an estimated cost of 40 million dollars. It employed over 3,400 workers daily. It was made even more famous by the film King Kong which opened in 1933.

The building lost it’s title of the tallest building to The World Trade Center in 1972. The Trade Center held the record for only one year as countries around the world erected taller and taller buildings.

 

 

 

The Burj Khalifa Building

Today the record is held by The Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Standing 2,717 feet tall this beautiful building will hold the record for, well who can say.

National World War II Memorial

More then 16 million American men and women served in the armed forces during World War II. Over 400,000 were killed during that war and at least twice that many returned home severely wounded or crippled. It is a shame that it took until April 29th, 2004 for this country to erect a memorial to those men and women.

National World War II Memorial as viewed from the Washington Monument

The National World War II Memorial is located in Washington DC on 17th St. Between Constitution and Independence Avenues if you should care to visit. The monument is dedicated to all the men and women and their spirit, sacrifice and commitment of the American People.
