History of Mother’s Day

What is so special about the second Sunday in May?

But just what is Mothers Day and how did it get started. Compared with history Mothers Day as it is celebrated now is relatively new. At least as how we celebrate it now by giving our cherished mothers gifts and other goodwill sentiments, but it wasn’t always that way. Going back a little in time it was goddesses, mythological female deities and the like that were worshiped and cherished on that day.

In ancient Rome it was known as the festival of Isis which typically lasted for three days. Isis you say! Wasn’t that an Egyptian God? Well yes, but don’tforget about Cleopatra and her influence on Caesar. Strange as it may seem, the Romans also honored another deity, this time a Greek deity known as Cybele or the Great Mother.

Does that mean that Egypt celebrated Mothers day with a festivity honoring a Roman Goddess? Nope not at all. As the Egyptian story goes Isis’s husband Orisis was dismembered into 13 pieces. Isis then reassembled him and impregnated herself. Her son Horus grew up to unify Egypt becoming the first Pharaoh. As a result Isis became known as the Mother of the Pharaoh’s.

The ancient Greeks had another deity they honored. The Greek mother of the gods Rhea was honored and worshiped in a festival. These festivities kind of got out of hand and were eventually discouraged and banned only to be replaced with festivities honoring another mother deity known as Cybele in which flowers and honey cakes where shared and eaten.
