Thanksgiving History

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

Be sure to visit our Thanksgiving Baskets page to see our Fall/Thanksgiving gift selections.

It won’t be long now before we sit down around the dinning room table with family and friends and dig in to that delicious holiday meal.

The First Thanksgiving

Some things you may not have known. That first meal or holiday was not called Thanksgiving at all and was not repeated every year. No it did not take place on the fourth Thursday of November. Historians are not sure when it took place, but believe it to be sometime around the fall harvest (Sep.-Nov.). It wasn’t until 1782 before a state (New Hampshire) declared November 28th Thanksgiving Day.

Ever wonder what the Pilgrims ate at that very first Thanksgiving in 1621. Some things may surprise you. By the menu, they had quite a feast.

For meat they had venison and seal. For fowl they had goose, duck, swan, crane, partridge, eagle and of course wild turkey. For seafood they had lobster, cod, clams and eel. No they did not have any ham.

Their vegetables consisted of peas, carrots, radishes, onions, lettuce, beans and pumpkin. They did not have potatoes or sweet potatoes. Nor did they have any fresh corn on the cob.

They did not have cranberry sauce or pumpkin pie.

They also had fruit and nuts consisting of grapes, plums, walnuts, chestnuts and acorns.

They did not have cows milk, though they may have had goats milk.

Now that you know what they ate, enjoy your meal.

Thanksgiving an Origin

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Brought to you by Bob’s Gift Baskets

We all know that the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 by the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock right? Sorry but that is wrong.

The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth by Brownscombe

The first recorded Thanksgiving in what would become the United States was in September of 1565 in what would become St. Augustine Florida by 600 Spanish settlers. Since this colony did become part of the United States, it is the first Thanksgiving held in the United States.

Another Thanksgiving was held in April of 1598 by another Spanish colony just outside of what would become El Paso, Texas.

Yet another was held in December of 1619 by English settlers in the Virginia colony of Berkeley Hundred on the James River.

And yet history still records the first Thanksgiving as being held at the English Plymouth colony in the fall of 1621. Exact dates are still being argued, but it was held to as a harvest feast to celebrate their first harvest. It wasn’t even called a Thanksgiving celebration. It is rather iconic that this has become known as the “First Thanksgiving” while the 1565 Spanish celebration was a Thanksgiving Mass.

Well it really does not matter who gets the credit, but now we all know that Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. This year that is on the 26th.

Bob’s Gift Baskets has the perfect way to help you get in the mood. Visit our Thanksgiving Baskets page and give thanks.
